Intensives 2

New for 2018, our Summer Arts and Media Camp Intensives are week-long, non-credit options for students age 12 through 18, offering a deep-dive experience exploring genres and methods within a specific discipline. Classes in this full-day program will be hands-on, collaborative, and at a more rigorous pace in order for students to develop a deeper understanding of the topics, while also producing their own pieces throughout the week. Intensives are open to students of all experience levels - from those who are completely new to a subject area, up to and including those who are hoping to refine their already existing talents.

Summer Intensives are appropriate for all experience levels, but open only to middle and high school students age 12 through 18, entering grades 7th through 12th. Although no prior experience in an intensive is required, students must be invested in learning a new discipline and prepared to actively participate in all activities to maintain the engaging and highly collaborative environment for all attendees. Students entering 1st through 6th grade are eligible for the Summer Arts and Media Camp which aligns with the Summer Intensive dates and times. Please visit the Summer Arts and Media Camp page for more information.

Intensives Structure

Summer Arts and Media Camp Intensives are designed to help students hone in on their individual interests cultivated after multi-disciplinary introductory programs like the Summer Arts and Media Camp. Intensives are independent of each other, allowing students to customize their own summer arts program experience. In most intensives, students will be divided into collaborative small groups based on grade levels. Each group will be assigned one teaching assistant who will join them throughout the duration of the day. Structures will vary slightly depending on the discipline but in general, students will begin the week learning about the background of the intensive discipline and start collaborating and experimenting on their own work within it. The middle of the week will be focused, goal-oriented days, to start building out pieces. The end of camp will focus on refinement, showcasing work, and reflection.

"Our son learned new skills – not only technical and artistic, but about perseverance, the value of practicing, managing interpersonal conflicts, etc. He is often reluctant to try new things, but at this camp he felt safe to try new things and developed new confidence as a result...Giving artistic kids (who might otherwise feel like outsiders) a place to come together with other kids, and to develop relationships with counselors who also share their interests and quirks, was one of the best things about the camp experience."
